The Slant Bar Razor
One of the odd ducks in the wet shaving world is the Slant style razor.
The basic concept behind the Slant is that the blade edge meets your face on, yes, a slant.
The benefit is that the blade then slices through the whiskers more like a guillotine than chopping them straight on. It is the DE equivalent of a straight edge or cutthroat razor angle.
I went out on a limb in this post and called the Slant Bar the best DE razor made.
You don’t want to break in to DE safety razor shaving with this tool. Start with a Merkur HD or a vintage Super Speed. Use blades sharp but smooth like Crystals or Derbys. When you get your technique down, try a Merkur Slant. I like the big-handled version, the 39C.
If you find it’s not for you, you will have no problem selling it off online. Wet shavers who know their stuff will take it off your hands.
One of the header images here is a close up shot of the head of the Slant. Looks like the front end of Lucifer’s pickup truck.
Shavers smarter than I have covered the science of the Slant better than I could. Read some in-depth stuff complete with diagrams here, here and here.
